School Route Audits Research, Nationwide Living Streets
Mosodi Research worked with Living Streets to help assess how local authorities and other stakeholders are using School Route Audits and to suggest ways that they could be further developed.
Background
Encouraging more children to walk to school is a major government priority, recognising the multiple benefits for children’s health, the environment, and road safety around the school gate. Living Streets’ School Route Audits (SRAs) are widely used by local authorities to help understand local barriers to walking to school and how they can be addressed.
Our team undertook a rapid mixed-methods research exercise involving stakeholder interviews with local authorities and other stakeholders, a survey of SRA users, and statistical analysis of school travel and road safety trends.
Outcomes
Our work identified key strengths of SRAs and made clear recommendations to Living Streets on how they can be further enhanced for even greater impact. These recommendations are being used to shape the further development of SRAs so that local authorities have the best tools available to promote more active journeys to school.
