Tameside School Streets, Tameside Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council
Mosodi were commissioned by Tameside Council to support the development and implementation of three new School Streets. Our research, technical and consultation skills are supporting the successful implementation of effective schemes that have strong community backing.
Background
Government’s third Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy (CWIS3) prioritises school travel, with a national target of 60% of children aged 6-16 to walk, wheel or cycle to school by 2035. Supporting this, Tameside Council aims to more than double the number of active School Streets by the end of 2026. Mosodi have been supporting the development and implementation of three new School Streets in Tameside. Our work involves collecting data and evidence to support the design of the schemes, mapping local context and transport connections, developing a prioritisation tool, and supporting community, school and stakeholder engagement.
A series of engagement events were held at the schools during early June 2026, supported by online and paper-based surveys, analysis of stakeholder input, production of drawings produced to show options for road closures, and further consultation on these scheme design options.
Outcomes
Our work is supporting the development of Experimental Traffic Regulation Orders and the trialling of three new schemes, which are expected to be implemented in late 2026. We are collecting baseline data on pupil’s mode of travel to school and will support the monitoring and evaluation of follow up data, additional traffic counts, and further stakeholder feedback to measure the impact of the schemes.
