Kellingley Colliery, North Yorkshire Harworth

Mosodi provided transport planning consultancy for the redevelopment of the Kellingley Colliery site, the UK’s last operational deep mine, into a major commercial hub. The project encompasses 134,662 sqm (1,453,500 sqft) of mixed-use commercial floorspace, including small-scale retail units and logistics infrastructure. Mosodi’s role included conducting Transport Assessments and preparing detailed Transport Statements to ensure the seamless integration of the redevelopment with the surrounding transport networks.

Background

The Kellingley Colliery site, a former deep coal mine in North Yorkshire, has been earmarked for redevelopment as part of a broader regional regeneration initiative. The site spans over 134,000 sqm and is strategically located with excellent access to major motorways, making it ideal for commercial use. The vision for the site is a multi modal logistics and industrial hub. Mosodi was brought on board to assess and mitigate transport impacts, ensuring that the redevelopment would operate efficiently and sustainably while meeting local accessibility and environmental goals.

Outcomes

Mosodi’s transport assessments and statements were key in demonstrating the viability of the Kellingley Colliery redevelopment. Our work ensured that the site’s extensive commercial floorspace would be well-served by both road and rail infrastructure, with minimal disruption to surrounding areas. The retention and improvement of the existing rail siding were crucial for facilitating sustainable logistics operations. Additionally, our input helped optimise traffic flow and parking provisions for the commercial spaces, ensuring the project met its transport and accessibility targets. The redevelopment is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the region, including job creation and the regeneration of a historically significant site.
