Royal Oldham Hospital – Light, Oldham The Northern Care Alliance NHS Group
Mosodi UK Ltd provided transport consultancy services for the Royal Oldham Hospital’s £28 million redevelopment project. Following an initial scoping exercise, Mosodi produced a comprehensive Transport Statement to support the planning application for the new four-storey extension. The development aimed to address the hospital’s bed shortage by introducing two new 24-bed general surgery wards and a new emergency theatre, transforming the hospital into a high-acuity surgical hub for Greater Manchester.
Background
The Royal Oldham Hospital faced challenges due to a shortage of beds, leading to patients being treated in corridors during high-pressure periods. To alleviate this, the Northern Care Alliance NHS Group approved a £28 million extension to the main hospital building. The new facility, named ‘Phase 4B,’ involved demolishing existing structures to make way for two new general surgery wards, a new emergency theatre, and additional critical care beds. The extension was designed to connect internally with the previously approved Phase 4A extension and the main hospital building.
Outcomes
Mosodi’s transport statement supported the planning application, ensuring that the proposed development met local transportation policies and sustainable travel principles. The project secured planning approval and is set to enhance the hospital’s capacity, improving healthcare services for residents of Oldham, Bury, Rochdale, and North Manchester. Additionally, Mosodi undertook our 1dayaweek campaign at Royal Oldham Hospital, promoting sustainable travel practices and encouraging the hospital’s staff and visitors to adopt more eco-friendly transport options.
