Wigan Galleries Town Centre Redevelopment, Wigan Wigan Cityheart and Wigan Council

The £135 million redevelopment project will transform the town centre into a vibrant and modern destination through a carefully designed mixed-use scheme. This ambitious regeneration will feature a high-quality hotel, a revitalised market hall, dynamic entertainment and event space, and a multi-story car park to support increased footfall. The development will introduce 500 contemporary residential units, providing much-needed housing and fostering a thriving community.

Background

To achieve a seamless design, Mosodi prioritised the transportation strategy, enhancing walking and cycling accessibility by managing and minimising vehicular access and on-site car parking. By blending commercial, leisure, and residential elements, the project aims to boost the local economy, attract visitors, and create a more connected and sustainable urban environment.

Outcomes

Mosodi demonstrated that the reduction of car parking within Wigan Galleries and the repurposing of the space for public realm would be appropriate and revitalise an underused area of the town centre. The highway strategy enabled large parts of the Site to become enhanced public realm, whilst still providing appropriate emergency, public transport, taxi and servicing access to ensure that the town centre’s operation was safe and could deliver reduced congestion on the surrounding highway network.
